New partner wanted for picturesque Lake District GP practice

A GP surgery in the Lake District is aiming to persuade a new partner to make one of the most picturesque parts of the country their new home.

Coniston Medical Practice has advertised for a part-time GP partner to take on the job-sharing role alongside Dr Katharina Frey.

Dr Frey ran the practice alongside her husband, Dr Simon Fisher, before he sadly passed away in December, and is now seeking a GP to come in and help keep this vital service running in the heart of the Lakes.

She said: “Becoming a GP partner can be a big step for any doctor, but hopefully the chance to move to such a wonderful part of the country is too much of an opportunity to miss.

“We have a very welcoming team here at Coniston Medical Practice and there is a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere to work here, which might be a welcome change of pace for some. We also have a very friendly and supportive local community, which is why I am so keen to find a new GP partner for the practice.”

This is a rare opportunity to come and work in one of the best-known and much-loved parts of the Lake District National Park, caring for a close-knit community of over 1,000 patients.

The area, unsurprisingly, attracts many tourists each year who come to explore the rugged mountains and beautiful lakes, some of whom will inevitably require a local medical service in the village.

Dr Frey is keen to keep the practice running as a partnership and Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is supporting her in the search to bring in someone to work alongside her as a partner.

The job offers a very flexible approach to a job share with 4-5 sessions per week and there is potential for the new partner to take advantage of an NHS England incentive, which gives eligible participants a sum of up to £20,000.

Kate Hudson, Head of Primary Care at Morecambe Bay CCG, said: “Dr Fisher was a well-known and popular GP in Coniston and ran the practice with Dr Frey for 14 years, and he is greatly missed by his colleagues, patients and the local community as a whole.

“It’s our duty to make sure that the people of Coniston and the surrounding areas continue to have access to GP care and we are working hard to ensure that happens in the best way possible.”
